Hopscotch for New Orleans

Inspired by lesson plans and an especially poignant message, “Have a safe weekend,” left intact on the chalkboard at Colton Middle School since the day Hurricane Katrina struck (see images below), Julia Mandle created a Chalk Shoes performance for Prospect.1 New Orleans.

Working in collaboration with local students from the International School of Louisiana and using her signature chalk shoes to scuff marks along the pavement, Mandle engaged the public in a large-scale, outdoor drawing. Influenced by the French iteration of hopscotch, Escargot, performers created overlapping spirals in a slow moving procession through the streets of New Orleans. Like outdoor mural painting, this action explored creative ways for students and neighbors to redraw, re-imagine, and transform the abandoned school and surrounding area.
