Paths to the Park

Paths to the Park was a collaboration between Julia Mandle, the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Pittsburgh Children's Museum and the New Hazlett Theater in Pittsburgh, PA.

The project began as a workshop where Mandle guided MCG’s after-school students in the creation of chalk shoes—an outgrowth of previous Chalk Shoes projects in other locations. She also developed a curriculum which educated students on the tactics of artistic intervention and urban revitalization.
Following the workshop, representatives from eleven fellow North Side organizations joined the students in a procession combining performance and drawing that marked the “paths to the park” with scuffed lines from the participants’ chalk shoes. Paths to the Park concluded with an exhibition at MCG's satellite gallery in the Cultural District that explored topics surrounding art and activism with an emphasis on cultural awareness of Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood.
